Founded in 1884, Stiles Hall is a private, non-profit agency dedicated to serving the broader community while enriching the lives of students at the University of California, Berkeley.
For over 134 years, Stiles Hall has distinguished itself by...
- Being one of the few Bay Area organizations to actively oppose the internment of Americans of Japanese ancestry during World War II.
- Helping to initiate the United Student Cooperative Association in the 1930’s, which continues to provide affordable housing for hundreds of students, annually.
- Providing an open forum for a broad range of controversial viewpoints, including those of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Stiles Hall is honored that its previous Executive Director, John A. Martin, Jr., was appointed by Jerry Brown to be Chairman of the Fair Employment and Housing Commission of the State of California.
