Facing You, Facing
Me:
Race, Class & Gender Among
U.C. Berkeley Student Leaders
|
|
|
"Nowhere else at the
University, and perhaps in the state have such diversity of
social, socio-economic, and political student perspectives
been engaged in such a profound manner" -David Campt, Presidents Initiative on Race
Relations |
|
Facing You, Facing Me, co-sponsored by the U.C.B. Ethnic Studies Department for the last twenty years, and featured in California Nexsreel's nationally acclaimed documentary "What's Race Got to Do with It?", addresses interracial conflict and understanding
by bringing together student leaders, including four of
the last five student body presidents from Marin to Hunters
Point, and from East L.A. to Beverly Hills. In an experiential/student
centered course, participants from extremely diverse racial
and class backgrounds develop intimate bonds, as individuals,
while confronting personal prejudice and institutional racism.
|
| Purpose: To provide students from
diverse racial, ethnic, and class backgrounds the opportunity
to learn from and with each other about issues of racial and
class conflict, isolation, and understanding in an atmosphere
of openness and mutual respect. |
| Requirements: Consistent participation,
punctuality and openess (i.e. risk expressing honest opinions).
Lead one session with fellow students around your own racial/ethnic/class
identity (structure will be provided). A creative experiential
project related to semester's learnings, conducted in multi-racial
terms (meet with the instructor first). Four to ten pages
a week from a reader. |
Class (Ethnic Studies 98/198)
will meet both Fall and Spring semesters on Wednesdays 2-5pm.
The class must be taken P/NP. Due to high demand the class
will be limited to only 16 students. Call David Stark for
interview (510) 841-6010.
